How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump
