How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump
